Over the summer after a disappointing season, Rockets star James Harden made the choice to take on the leadership role for his franchise. With the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics, Harden was invited to join the team but declined like other stars gaining significant criticism about his leadership and work ethic. Harden ultimately turned down the opportunity to recruit free agents and help improve the rockets. “I have made the sacrifice that I want to do whatever it takes to win, so it’s one of the reasons why I didn’t go to the Olympics this summer,” Harden told The Vertical. “It was one of the toughest decisions that I’ve ever made in my life. For my legacy here in Houston and in the NBA, I thought it was important." The Rockets in the offseason signed forward Ryan Anderson, guard Eric Gordon, and veteran center Nene to hopefully turn the Rockets back into a winning organization. Harden knew that last year was disappointing and a struggle, his response was working out with his teammates to improve their game. "We've doing something I haven't since I've been here in Houston. Just trying to shake things up, just trying to make sure we really know each other in and out on and off the court. I think that will translate to a better team." In my opinion the biggest reason for Hardens early struggles last season was caused by the distractions from Khloe Kardashian being a heavy negative influence. James was spotted multiple times going to parties and clubs instead of working with his teammates causing Harden to be out of shape going into training camp."I've been training all summer," Harden said. "Last season wasn't great at all. It was very disappointing. I don't want to let that happen two years in a row. I've been in the gym working out to get my mind, body and soul right." Harden obviously seems more focused then ever and working with his teammates showing his strives of becoming the teams leader. Through the last two preseason games Harden looked like a better play maker getting 10+ assists and ultimately keeping the team on the same page.“I want to do whatever it takes to win.”
